Why A Flock Share?
Eggs are one of nature’s most nutritious foods. They are simply packaged and can be eaten at any meal in a large number of recipes. From scrambled eggs for breakfast to a quiche for dinner or as an ingredient in your favorite cake recipe, eggs are a staple most kitchens need.
Shade Stone Farm’s mission is to sustainably produce high quality, affordable, healthy, chemical free, non-genetically engineered food while supporting the local community. Promoting chicken ownership fits that mission. However, there are a number of barriers that prevent people from owning chickens. Lack of enough time, equipment or space, as well as concern for the hen’s fate if it doesn’t work out, can prevent folks from taking the plunge. Our Flock Share program solves those issues. What Does It Cost?
Your initial purchase of an unspecified hen is $12. This fee is repeated every two years and makes you the owner of the hen. The hen is “unspecified” so we can manage them as a flock. This allows us to ensure that you receive 6 ungraded, truly free-range, fresh eggs each week (as a hen’s laying can vary with the season and her molting period). The boarding fee is $6 per month per hen. You may purchase as many hens as you’d like. There are no other costs.
You may take physical possession of your hen whenever you’d like, but once she leaves our farm we will not take her back. However, if you would like to leave the flock share program and your hen remains on our farm, we will assume ownership and allow her to continue living a happy hen life in our flock as long as she is healthy. |
How Does It Work?
You purchase an unspecified laying hen from among the hens in Shade Stone Farm’s laying flock. Then, for a small monthly fee, we will provide housing, bedding, feed, water, and daily care for your chicken. Your chicken will free- range the grounds of our 130 acre chemical free, diversified farm with the rest of our flock. She will supplement her daily foraging with non-GMO, locally-produced feed and find shelter in our ‘Chicken Castle.’
While your chicken is living as a chicken should, we will collect your eggs daily and store them at or below 45 degrees Fahrenheit until we provide them to you at the agreed upon weekly or bi-monthly pick up location. You may visit your chicken at our farm, and if you decide you would like to move your chicken to your home, you may do so at any time. More Details
